Medieval painted panels
Soft black pigment with subtle brownish undertone; a color that is closer to charcoal gray than to deep black. No information on the actual age of this pigment. It is composed of natural earth, calcium carbonate, iron and manganese, from Italy (surprise!). Good lightfastness, mixes with any medium and pigment. A nice black to use for darkening colors without making the resulting hue look too dull.
NOTE: Art shown as color examples may not actually be painted with Roman Black. This is an attempt to show what Roman Black might have looked like in such paintings.
