And something to consider when shopping at AEP are some brand-new offerings, here for the first time online.
New Pigment: Egypt Green
The ancient Egyptians learned the technique of making colored glass and grinding it fine for pigments in the time of the Pharaohs, and the colors persist vibrantly to this day. Our Egypt Green pigment can be used in watercolor, gouache, tempera, oil, fresco, acrylics and ceramics. This is a ground glass pigment colored with copper, so as always avoid inhalation, but it is nontoxic and easy to work with.
New Pigment: Jord’s (Icelandic) Red
This rich russet colored pigment is made from authentic Icelandic volcanic rock. Of course, for our site we’ve named it after the Norse goddess Jörð, Mother Earth (and mother of the mighty Thor). Useful in the same media as Egypt Green (as are most of our pigments). One can imagine a medieval Icelandic scribe using a similar rock to make a red pigment like this one to illuminate the sagas.
New Pigment: Bergamo Brown
A lovely, neutral, red-brown non-toxic earth pigment from northern Italy. This is nicely different from the more familiar siennas and umbers and ochers, giving you a new earth tone to use in your painting. Also useful in watercolor, gouache, oil, fresco, acrylics, and ceramics!
New Pigment: Teal Blue-Green
This is a powerful, modern, copper-phthalocyanine color. This pigment mixes toward green in watercolor, more blue in oil binders. Intriguingly different from our light and dark turquoise colors. In addition to the usual media, this pigment also works in pastels and in milk paints and casein paints.
As always our pigments are designed to be used to make paints and are not rated for any other purpose. Always use gloves and a dust mask when handling fine powders, and don’t mix tools and containers between your art and kitchen activities. Our pigment jars are recyclable, but don’t reuse them in your kitchen!
Have a wonderful holiday season, and happy painting from all of us at Ancient Earth Pigments.
