Cote D’Azur Violet

Description

This lovely subtle violet pigment is back by popular demand! Cote d’Azur Violet:  aka light caput mortuum from Switzerland. Natural slate, Fe203, contains iron / manganese. This color is found in Italian paintings and also north of the Alps, where the Asam brothers used it in churches for the cloaks of angels and saints. Although the original origin of the pigment is not clear, indistinguishable qualities of this mineral occur in different regions. The first find was in southern France on the Côte d Azur, but the current shipment is from an excavation between Chur and Zurich, Switzerland. Together with a slate green and a gray from the same origin, these colors create a very special mineral harmony. Their uniqueness results from a combination of shimmer and titanium that produces a pigment with higher opacity than other earth pigments.
